I think it was a stroke. I do love the comic (I read it everyday) but I kind of resent cliff-hangers like the one today.

Well, the comic strip IS based on the artist's real family life! She picks events that happened about three years ago, and also asks permission if it's really personal, like a breakup.
And, sadly, people do pass away..........
