Definition No. 2 is exactly right. For a lot of us, I'm sure the avatar is a personifcation of who we really are. Take mine, for example. I'm all puckered up and ready to plant a big one on ya!

Look their just computer wizards and the name sounded cool, I beat you a buck they didn't even think of it beyond hearing the name once, trying to make a cool site.
