Because they'll loose their "grants and funding" if thye DO NOT look for life in space! Some millionaires, programs, and companies fund these missions as part of their budgets. If NASA or some other program stopped looking, they'd be out of business. It's all to make a buck.

First, NASA, which is probably the largest space program in the world, had a 2005 budget of 16.6 billion USD. By way of comparison, the US Department of Defense had a 2005 budget of 441.6 billion USD. Just thought I'd put that in perspective.
Second, we have no evidence that we are alone. There's a lot of space out there, and we haven't even really gotten started yet.
Third, you're neglecting the numerous spinoff technologies produced by the space program. Most importantly, the computer you submitted this on. Without the miniaturized computers produced by the Apollo program, you'd be submitting this through the US Postal Service. If at all.
Finally, you're also forgetting that there might be raw materials available out there that we just can't get here on earth. We haven't found any yet, but like I said earlier, we haven't really started looking yet.

It's a little harsh of you to say that the world's nations are "wasting" billions. Space exploration and research leads to advancements in science and technology. A good rule of thumb is that for every dollar spent on space exploration returns about 90 cents in new advances which are applied to terrestrial life.
For instance, a new method of water filtration that would benefit people in areas where potable water is scarce.

Actually, there is life in space. There is life on the International Space Station. Seems reason enough to spend billions of dollars on it if you ask me.

let me put it other way, when u read the newspaper and u just beleive the contents of it.. if the newspaper say that something has happened to some place u simply believe without u actually going to that place and finding out........ this is the curiosity that lead all of us to search for knowledge...........
there are many sources(epics) which do tell us that there may be some life on other planet so thats the reason that space agencies spent money ....
the quest for knowledge never dies in human and thats makes us different from other living creature so we will keep on discovering , exploring other planets.....

There is no proof for non-existence for life in space.May be they cannot be 'seen, touched or heard'. But , yes , spending billions of dollars on this and arguing whether pluto is a planet or not is something not very important, given the condition that there is poverty and war on this planet.

We have already seen the spinoffs in medicine and science.
Human will always seek knowledge. Since the day of your(long time ago) human have journeyed far and near to find the unknown.
America existed and people in America also existed but it was the European curiosity that opened up the region to the travel and commerce that we know and understand to-day.
