I do all the time and I'm gonna keep them to myself.

Timelord has a good point. I think Tehabwa might have one also, but I'm too tired to follow it.

Basically, I used to be skeptical that after all this time, there was any possibility of conjuring up an original thought. I've had several Literature professors tell me that there hasn't been a truly original story in hundreds of years - everything is in someway borrowing from other stories.

Then I learned about Go. Go is a game like Chess, except it is simpler, and yet more complicated at the same time. In Go, there are no rules about what piece can move in what ways. Every piece is identical. Yet because of the size of the board (30x30), and all the different sorts of strategies a player can employ, there are roughly as many different layouts of pieces on the board as there are stars in the entire universe. That is not an exaggeration, that is truly a scientific estimate (Based on what we know right now about stars, anyway). A 30x30 unit square-grid offers as many variants as there are stars in all of existance.

So if such a large number of possibilities can exist on such a simple system as graph paper, it would be foolish to think the human mind could be so tightly bound. Personally, I think any thought can be changed just so slightly to give it a new, original flavor.

(EDIT) Sorry... not stars. Protons. There are many more possible combinations on a 19x19 unit grid than there are ATOMS in the entire known universe.

Not really clear what you're asking or why, or what you mean by "searched and searched" or how you would determine whether or not a thought was original.

But here's a thought I've had for a while now that I got, not from anyone else, but from my own pointed little head.

Someone should manufacture photographically accurate globes (satellite photos copy/pasted together so there are no clouds obscuring the Earth's surface), and sell them to schools and for home use.

They would be completely unadorned, but come with clear plastic overlays. A basic one showing current political boundaries, but also a set (that you can overlay over the overlay) of snapshots in history, so kids could compare political boundaries over time.

Also, you could have sets that show other things, such as what languages are spoken where (use colors or patterns and have a Key in the middle of the Pacific where it wouldn't obscure anything) -- and have historical versions of these, as well.

Ditto religions.

Ditto state of various important technologies.

Population density.

Etc.

Train teachers to use these. Whenever we talk about any place, we all locate it on our globes (enough in the class for 2 or 3 kids to share).

Use the blank globe as an assessment tool -- fill out as much as you can.

Have a "where are we?" activity, where students locate their school, and mark with a sized blotch that shows how precisely (or imprecisely) they've located their school.

There's too much emphasis on maps in education, when maps are inaccurate.

Students, habitually using these globes, would come to really get to know the sphere where we live, and develop an accurate understanding of what's where and in what relationship to what else. This would be a Very Good Thing.

Better still would be for the globe to be a computer screen, where you could have huge overlay capability, as well as morphing over time.

Could even do continental drift.

But the technology doesn't yet exist for such a computer with spherical screen, but it would be great if someone would start work on figuring it out.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this.

Here's an original thought.... get off the dope. :-)

Come to think of it, that's been done. Here's one.... why don't we have DAR, like DVR only with radio? Why can't we pause and rewind "live" radio? You know, like a Tivo for radio? Don't you ever wish you could rewind a song on the radio or pause while you go to the bathroom or something?

By the way, when I think I've had an "original thought," somebody else usually has a patent on it within 2 years. LoL i.e. a coozie for your curling iron (travelers always use a hot iron on their hair, then pack it up), and a sipper lid that keeps the ice from hitting your lips when you tip a cold drink, and those rings that you put around a pie crust to keep it from burning.....

What an odd Q???

If you found one, would you recognize "it'? No offense.

If you search, have you considered an INNER search?

What is your gauge of original, and it's value to you personally. Have you never come upon a thought that was valid, and widely accepted?

Rev. Steven

Ponder this: Historically, original thoughts were/are, often dismissed as heresy, or foolish notion at the very least.

There are no original thoughts. There is some one some where that has also thought of that. Usually only one person will be bold enough to say what their thinking and therefore it seams to be an original thought.
How about that. But I am sure someone else has thought of this also.

I used to ask questions like this too... Years back when I frequently smoked loads of weed.

Drugs tend to do this to you. Otherwise... I agree with the Bible, in ecclisiastes where it says; "Their is nothing new under the sun."

Even Pot heads have used up all of the REALLY original thoughts as bizarre and strange as they might be.

Timothy Leary killed it all, way back in the 60's.
and actually, before him, Im sure they said it all in the temples at Delphi with their bay leaves tucked between their teeth & gums, tripping out from the "Smoke and Fumes." soothysaying and predicting the future in the presence of the sybilline.

and I am a weird one too, so I believe it's hopeless.
