.net stands for network related organizations but anyone can use this domain
.biz stands for businesses on the web
.gov stands for government institutions
.com stands for commercial and business but anyone can use this domain
.org stands for charitable and non-profit. Once again don't let this fool you since anyone can use this domain
.tv stands for national. Use to refer to a small island off the Pacific named Tuvalu but now is generic. Since it is so closely related to television look for this domain to be used by technology related sites.

They are different domains...it used to be a way of organizing (.com was commercial, .net was for networks, .org was for non-profits, .tv was for TV related sites, .gov is still for government agencies).

.net, .biz, .com and .tv are commercial sites (com=commercial)

.org is usually a not for profit organization

.edu is an educational website

.gov= government organization
