My wife is the same u need to keep track of the foods u eat. Your obg doctor wont give u any thing for it becuse he cant. He will tell u took take antacids. The doctor should have given u a book on what u could take and not take. But the main reason the doctor todls us was becuse occurs because the hormone progesterone slows the emptying of the stomach. It also relaxes the valve at the entrance to the stomach so that it doesn’t close properly, allowing acidic stomach contents to move upward into the esophagus, a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux, or acid reflux. It can get worse later on in the pregnancy when the growing uterus presses upwards on the stomach. This is a lot but i hope it helps

I'm so sorry and know that discomfort too. I had terrible heartburn throughout my last pregnancy, and it got worse if my stomach was empty. I took tums, drank milk, and made sure I had crackers on hand. It never really went away completely, but this did help.

Oh, and as for the "full head of hair" association with heartburn, it seems to be true, because my daughter has a TON of hair! :-)

I had the same problem...try drinking milk (didn't work for me) I had to live off of antacids till my son was born. Its an old wives tale...the more heartburn you have the more hair that your baby has...I had heartburn that could take down an elephant and my son was born with a whole head of hair

I had that same problems during my last two pregnancies. I never have heart burt outside of the pregnancy, and it's awful, isn't it?

Watch what you eat. I found that I had it worse if I had dairy products. Some people say spicy foods. Others, it's dry food. Different things can set it off. Keep a notebook for a food diary. List what you eat and at what time. Then if you have heart burn, mark that down as well. After a few days, you might see a common pattern emerging.

I only got it at night, after I laid down, too.

For now, keep taking antacids, but next time you are your prenatal appointment, bring it up to the doctor. S/he might have a better remedy for you.

I am at the same point in my pregnancy as you are. I get really bad heartburn as well. I do have to take antacids everyday. My doctor told me that if it gets really bad at night that you should try to elevate your bed if you can and prop yourself up with pillows. She also told me not to eat or drink anything 2 hours before I plan to lay down. Also I was told milk is one of the worse things you can try. Chocolate is bad as well. Good luck.

i had bad heartburn too, and to tell the truth, my baby was bald. Still is, ha! If it's allowed for you (dont know if youre a diabetic) whenever you get heartburn, eat a tablespoon of DRY sugar, and follow it up with a small glass of milk. The sugar nuetralizes the acid and the milk coats your belly. Good luck.

For that kind of heartburn, only Zantac 75 will work. Trust me! I just had a baby! Pepcid AC is NOT allowed for some reason, but every Dr. I know says Zantac is safe. I took it all through my pregnancy, and I have a wonderful, beautiful, healthy 5 month old.

Water did it to me also. I kept a bottle of antacids with me at all times. Only ones approved by the doctor. Try sleeping with your head elevated. I think the acid in your esophagus is more harmful than antacids often but check with your doctor.

Tum, tum tum, tum, TUMS!
I lived on tums during all five of my pregnancies! I never once had morning sickness but the heartburn made up for it.
All the boys are fine and the extra calcium probably made their bones healthier. (Only one broken one arm in twenty-two yrs)
As for the body not knowing how neutralize the acid on it's own after using antiacids... I've never had any problems with heartburn unless I was pregnant.
All the discomfort is worth it!!!! Best wishes with your new baby!
(I also drank alot of water...and then you know what you have to do next ; )
