Best to just use your personal judgement. Signs to look for: if your oven smokes whilst heating up; if there is a strong smell when heating up (and the oven is empty); if you see flaky deposits on the inside of the oven; if there is thick grease on the inside of the oven; if the glass door is heavily stained (usually brown), then your oven probably needs cleaning. Try Mr Muscle oven cleaner, but follow the instructions carefully, especially the bit about wearing gloves, ventilation etc. I clean mine a couple of times a year, this seems to be sufficient to keep it reasonably clean.

probably once a month, but i clean the grill pan once a week. the best stuff for cleaning your oven is something called "revive" it comes in quite a small white and green tub, and is completely odourless, non-toxic, non-caustic etc. i bought it from the Ideal Home Exhibition and it is truly amazing, you just wipe it over the oven/grill/oven shelves etc, leave it for a couple of minutes and wipe it off. NO SCRUBBING!!!!!!!
and the best thing i've ever done for oven shelves is soak them overnight in the bath, in boiling water, with biological washing powder, maybe 4 or 5 tablets? if you can do without the bath, then a whole day and night will transform black ingrained-dirt shelves to beautiful shiny silver ones, without lifting a finger.
and no i'm not related to Kim and Aggie, but I have moved house a lot and discovered the filth that others leave behind in rented properties, so over time you learn these little tips (usually courtesy of my mum!).
happy (non) scrubbing xx

That answer will be different with each individual.. It depends almost wholly on how much it is used. I let its looks determine when I "self-clean".. I am VERY particular about ovens and I have always(this is just me) determine how good a person cleans house by the looks of the oven.. So.. when there is significant build up of residue, I clean it.. maybe once a year or once every six months

I never cleaned the old one it was about a million years old I had to clean the new one cos I left a plastic lid in there and it melted and filled the house with black smoke and was all over the shelf and the bottom so i had to scrub it i put everything in on a baking tray now to catch the spills so i dont need to get on my hands and knees to often

I clean mine when it starts to smoke, maybe once twice a year. Yiu can actually get people in your local paper who will professionally clean your oven for about £30-40. Its a hard job so maybe this is an option.

I chuck a tub of bicarb on it when I spill something - every few months. Then I wipe it out. I'm afraid Norman is right. You can judge a person's housewfiely skills by the state of their oven. Mine isn't very good at all. And I don't care.

When it is needed. Its not used much as i eat out often.
Oven Pride is the best thing to use on it. Just apply and rinse. No scrubbing. It can also be used on pots and pans and tea pots etc etc..
Try it, its in an orange box and makes light of what is usually a pretty crap job around the house.
