Depends on the abnormality. Definately see a doctor, but I wouldn't be surprised if the first step was putting you on a birth control pill. The forced horomones give most women a regularly timed period and helps lighten overly heavy flow.
A good book for information is "Taking Back the Month." www.takingbackthemonth.com My doctor recommended this for me for a couple years before I finally bought it and it is VERY helpful.
