Winter is really not the best time to grow veg/fruit, especially when you have limited space. Cabbage and Cauliflower are winter crops, and you could try these in a pot or windowbox on the balcony, but probably herbs and salad on a windowsill indoors would be a better bet.
And look forwards to planting your balcony in spring. With limited space, go for exotic things that cost lots in the shops. Courgettes are good, Strawberries, Cherry Tomatoes.

If your balcony is glassed-in, and faces south, you should be able to grow just about anything. But save the pots for fruit trees and tall bushy vegetables. All other vegetables like lettuce and herbs (anything short) would best be grown in hydroponic tubes. See the link below...

Herbs are good - I grow mine in a Hydrophonics herb trough. No need for soil - just water and liquid feed. Parsley, basil, chives and coriander are my favourites.

Don't know where you live? Mostly herbs and maybe onions.
Come around February you can start seedlings for the spring.
