I so love rhododendras. This will not hurt dish dtergent diluted and spray. If that doesen't work a tablespoon of anomia in a spray bottle. If you live anywhere where we had a lot of rain that could be the reason for so many nasty flies. Sometimes I wonder if Mrs. Noah really let the fly, mosquito, rat or snake on board. I would not have obeyed Noah or God on that.

I am sure you do not have your Rhodie in the house as CR500 is thinking????
Are they "White Flies"? as in very tiny / miniature white flies? That flurry up in a group when disturbed?
If so, spray with insecticidal soap then use a powerful nozzle on your hose and wash away as many as you can. You may have to use something stronger as White Fly is persistent.

Soil too wet.
Set plant outside when possible.
A soap spray works as well as horticulture soap spray.
