My little girl is three weeks old. I'd like to start giving her some supervised tummy time. Is it too soon? If so, when can I start? Any tips?

They say you can give a newborn tummy time. My daughter just turned 4 months old, and she is just now accepting tummy time. She can roll from her back to her tummy, just not the other way), she will play for awhile then get mad cuz she's "stuck". As long as you are there with her, tummy time is fine, I did it with my daughter, just try a few mintues at a time.

Another good question from Mandy...deserves another good answer from Lindsey...

You can start today...Dr's recommend a little tummy each day right from the start. All you need to do is lay her on a blanket (I guess you don't have to use a blanket but I always do :) and then get down there and chat away to her. Sometimes I jingle toys around to get my little angel's attention, but you don't have to, they like to just look around. If you want you can put a boppy pillow or rolled up towel under her chest to give her a little boost. They make cool little "tummy time gyms" you can buy but at this point you don't need to.

Here is a good article about tummy time from Parents magazine.
For those who didn't know what "tummy time" is or why it's important: Putting your baby on his tummy is basically exercise for him. It helps him develop his neck and shoulder muscles so that he can hold up his head. It also starts him to developing the ability to crawl. This article sites other benefits as well.

tummy time.....immediately

i gave my children tummy time almost right off the bat. you should pick up a copy of what to expect the first year it has alot of helpful information about areas such as tummy time and many others.

both my boys were actuallly not big fans of tummy time because they were so interested in looking at everything...right from the start so they were fussy on there tummies. but a little is important to help develop the neck muscles...this is what aids them in holding there heads up on there own later on.

good luck....and check out the book.

I started tummy time with my now two month old daughter when she was still in the hospital first born. She always liked it. To do this i layed slightly reclined in bed or coach and layed her on my chest. It has worked . She now holds her head very well the only time it flops to the side is when she is tired or asleep. It doesnt really flop it sags. Doc is very impressed and surprised by this.

You can start now but keep the time very small. Say a minute or two. Each few weeks you can gradually increase by a minute or so.
My daughter hated tummy time lol.

As a new mother I never knew that floor time was needed for babies, till I started sending my little one to child care. You can start with her laying on a blanket on her back with a stimulator toy above her, and this will get her used to being away from you, just stay where you can see her, but she can't see you. If she starts to fuss lay with her and show her how the lights and music works on the toy. You would be amazed how much she will pay attention to the to the noise and lights. As she gets used to being on the floor, she will start to turn over on her own. She will want to explore. Good luck!!!

You can start right away. She's old enough. Put her on her tummy, and put your hands at the end of her feet. When she kick/pushes her feet against your hands it will propel her forward. This is good for building leg muscles and learning to crawl.

Congrats on your new addition!!!

I always read you could do it from birth. A lot of babies don't like it at first, but it is very helpful in the development of the muscles that they use to hold up their heads, and to roll over. As long as you are right there, you can do it now! Enjoy!
