In my opinion (and experience), the applicator you use isn't as important as how you apply the varnish (or polyurethane). When applying it, you should apply it in thin, even coats and brush it on in one direction only. Do not go over it like your putting on paint or you will get air bubbles in the finish. Also make sure that the surface is completely clean and dust free. Once the first coat dries, use a very fine sandpaper or 0000 steel wool and lightly go over the finish to rough it up a bit. Then use a tack cloth to clean of any dust and apply the second coat. I would put on at least 3-4 coats to ensure even coverage and a durable finish. As for the applicator, I would use a good quality all natural Chinese bristle brush if it's water based; synthentic brush if it's water based. And only stir the varnish or poly. DO NOT SHAKE to mix.

Bubbles come from too thick and application, or bubbles present from agitating the varnish.
Thin coats, light sand, coat again, and keep varnish still.

use a high quality bristle brush if you are using oil based finish, use a high quality nylon brush if you are using a water based finish. oil is better. gently stir the finish before and during use...do not ever shake or aggetate it. do not try to do it all in a couple of heavy coats...several light coats, with light sanding between coats, will give you the results that you are after.

those faom brushes are good, but there is a very inexpensive brush you can get at any local hardware store. it is made for stains and varnishes. I think it goes for $1.50
