ELECTRIC! TELEPHONE! and CARS! This is a hard question, like you said, when you look around, we have learn to depend on so many inventions, it is almost impossible to name only 3! Good Question - Take Care!

1. Farming, without the ability to stay put, society would not have evolved past small nomadic tribes, or hunters/gatherers. I include both cultivation of crops and domestication of animals (I know they were far apart but similar in basic ideas)

2. Gunpowder/guns. Again these are pretty far apart in timing, but very related. With the advent of firearms, a small island country was able to pretty much take over most of the world. Colonialism would nat have happened without the gun, Cortez would not have been ablt to conquer the Aztecs with bows and arrows, it was superior fire power, somehting that tipped the scales in most global situations for hundreds of years, the basis of a lot of our modern problems can be traced back to European expansion and conquest (except teh mid-east lets face it things were f'd up there long before gun powder made it out fo China, let alone before theinvention of the gun.

3. The computer. Wihout this inventions, there would have been not atomic bomb, no space program, obviously no internet, etc etc etc. Just think back to the fear that gripped us all on Dec. 30 1999. Y2K ended up being much ado about nothing, but what if all the computers suddenly failed. We have become so totally dependent on these fabulous things, we would be hard pressed to find any aspect of our lives not touched by a computer.

My great grandfather passed away about 16 years ago at the ripe old age of 105. He traveled from Louisanna to Texas after getting married at the age of 20 in a covered wagon. He came here to work in the booming oil fields of South East Texas. This man lived through some of the most inovative times and saw advancements that were inconcievable at the beginning of his life. We have video taped interviews with him and one question that was asked was "What's the greatest invention of all time?"

With out hesitation his response was "Refridgeration." He went on to explain that the ability to cool and to freeze has tremendous impact and with out this ability many of our current day inventions could not have been done. If you look at food service for example, before refridgeration there was no way to preserve anything short of smoking, salting or canning. Fresh food was what you killed or harvested today for yesterday's fresh food is spoiled with out refridgeration. How many medicines have you seen that need to be refridgerated? Our sophisticated electronics wouldn't be possible with out the ability to keep them cool in climate controlled rooms. Milk had be drank the day it came from cow (and it was always warm) and butter would last only a few days. The exception to some to these is that winter provided some ability to freeze and/or keep cool items and then only in certain regions. But winter time became a time to be concerned with staying warm instead of keeping things cold.

So I'm not sure what I would name the top three, but I know what get's my vote for number one.

Couple of small points
1. Antibiotics & electricity were discoveries, not inventions.
2. Alexander Graham Bell did NOT invent the telephone - Antonio Meucci did - he patented it in 1871.

My 3 favourite inventions -
1. Farming.
2. Democratic government
3. Corvette.
