How does the Virtual Console work on the Wii?

What do you do to add games to your Wii

I'm assuming that it works by some means of emulation. The Wii may have NES, SNES and N64 emulators all built into the hardware. Then you just download whatever games you want and save them to the onboard memory (512MB I think) or a removable storage card. The Virtual Console is one of the main reasons I want a Wii.
