You CANT have your own personal domain name without paying for it. You CAN however host a website without a domain name, it will be a sub domain name. Try your ISP and check your account for webspace. Most providers give you a certain amount of space in your account along with web authoring tools. If the tools arent to your liking, you can buy some cheap drag and drop web page software for as little as 20 bucks.

Free domain name? Never heard of, unless you have a special interest and someone cares to sponsor you. Domain name registration is done by regulatory authorities that need to fulfill certain obligations. This come with cost. Not very expensive, surf around, you may find a fast and inexpensive ($3) domain name registration somewhere. You next challenge is to host your website. Now this means someone needs to make space (at a cost) on their web-server for your material, and allow bandwidth (traffic) to view your site. This also comes with cost. Special interest groups gets sponsors as mentioned earlier that pay for these services (then you get it for free). Advice: Have your intended website hosted for free at many on-line service providers first. Your web address (domain) will look like www.their-domain.com/~mywebsite.html. Only downside of this free service: They get to place advertisements in the header of each of your web-pages!!

Nothing is free!
There are a lot of free hosting solutions including Yahoo Geocities but without a free domain.
Other web hosts offer free domains but with a hosting package (see www.precioushosting.com).
Free hosting always come with limitations: small file sizes, small traffic or ads.
I suggest to buy your own hosting, or if you want to use a free host to buy your own domain name in order to have your own personality on the web.

I'm not sure why you want to do this if you indeed want a, "big", website. But there you go.
