I often wonder if removing Israel from the mix would solve the Middle East conflict. But probably not. No neighboring nation to Israel has offered an help to the Palestinians. If fact, Egypt, Jordan & Syria each took control of lands that were initially laid out for a State of Palestine after WWI. So the blame cannot be laid squarely on the existence of Israel. Perhaps the best solution is time. The Ottoman Empire has been dissolved less than 100 years. That's not much time in the overall scheme of things. These people must learn to coexist. What we can do is not exacerbate the situation with poor diplomatic policy. Otherwise we will just have to sit and wait it out.

If you mean the western world by "we", we can't. Like any conflict,it takes both parties to agree to cease hostilities. This hasn't happened in the middle east at any point in history. Most people will not accept the fact that this is a religious war, but it is.If you study the history of the middle east you will find they have never been at peace, even within their own religion.Their religion is irrational, and you can't win an argument with an irrational person. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

We can't solve it. We shouldn't even be expected to solve it.

First, those in the MiddleEast have to desire to live in peace *together*. Israeli's, Palestinians, Sunni's, Shiites, Kurds, Lebanese and any other faction that resides there. That will never happen. Even if you remove the Israeli's from the mix you still have Sunni's against Shiites. Sunni and Siites against Kurds. It just isn't possible.

What should we do or should have done? Well, our biggest mistake as it were was giving unconditional support to Israel. I'm not saying I do not support the Israeli's in their right to retain the land that has been theirs since Biblical times. I just believe that Israel has been displaying an air of arrogance at our expense.

We need to hold the United Nations to task. This won't happen though. You have countries on the Security Council that are basing support on their own agenda's not on what is in the best interest of the world as a whole. I'm not referring to the United States either. I am referring to Russia, China France and Germany. Prior to invading Iraq, had Russia, France and Germany stood with the United States and demanded that Saddam comply with UN Resolutions we would not be where we are today. They didn't do that though. France was deep into the Oil for Food scandal alongside Saddam. Russia was financially benefiting from arms and technology sales to various countries in the region and Germany is a follower, not a leader, desiring for the European block of countries to unseat the US as the spuerpower of the world.. None of them could afford to change the course of their own foreign policies. China likes the disruption. While the US, France, Germany and Russia were bickering China positioned itself as the up and coming world power. Everyone is kinda ignoring that fact. Look how they are prodding on North Korea. That is another diversion that is drawing the United States's attention away from what is happening in the MiddleEast.

How can we help to allieviate the crisis in the MiddleEast? We have to start here in the United States. We are a country divided. Our own citizens are bringing the demise of this country and everything it stands for with the political game playing going on. Like it or not, President Bush is our President. Whether or not you believe he is the legitimate leader of this country does not matter. He is what we have right now and we need to unite to defeat the bigger evil, those who want to destroy our country from the outside. Saying that falls on deaf ears though.

We can't help fix the MiddleEast until we fix ourselves.

I like what leef had to say above. It is thinking out of the box but I believe he may be onto something.

That doesn't answer the problem with religious extremists who still will do whatever is necessary to keep the unrest going. THAT is going to take the world coming together as one, putting political agenda's aside and stating in no uncertain terms that terrorism in any form will not be tolerated.

There are multiple ways to resolve it, but would like to propose just one - Have the imams and mullahs stop preaching hatred for Israel and the Jews, stop poisoning their own soles with hate.
You may think that it is a one-sided opinion, but it isn't. For the longest time I took the Arabic side in the conflict. Now I see that of two sides only one is preaching, and even worshiping hatred.

Dissolve the states of Israel and Palestine.
Disarm both sides and set up a provisional police force from outside the country.
Put in a UN gouvernor who could be accepted by both sides.
Try to unravel the land rights and give their land back to those Palestinians who have been dispossessed by fraud and violence, but only if they want to live there.
Work out a constitution for a secular state.
Set up a gouvernment elected freely and democratically in a proportional voting system.
Let the children be educated together in secular schools.
Ban every politician/media outlet that incites conflict immediately for a certain time.

Don't hold your breath.

it is possible. But first it needs controlling the hate propaganda aimed at the arabs and palestinians. Then I would propose resettling the weaker side of the conflict to a new territory- preferably out of direct range of artillery. Even if that land is a complete rocky desert, converting it into a land of milk and honey will cost less than paying for all this war

Stop buying oil. Without oil money the funds would quickly dry up to train, buy guns, and buy explosives.

The saying goes you don't win a modern war by defeating the army on the battle field. You win it by eliminating the modern army's ability to wage war.

The same holds true for insurgents. If there are no guns and ammo there's not much insurgency.

According to the Bible Prophecy; this has to come to pass!!
There wouldn't be Peace in the Middle East even if we left!!
If they would outlaw their religion, it would help, but that would take several generations to see effect!!!
The only thing we can do is Pray for their hearts to Change!!

The West needs to become energy independent so we no longer have to buy their supply. Without money from the oil industry the mideast would be knocked back to the 13th century.

Every terrorist training camp is bombed to dust. One MOAB (Massive Ordinance Air Burst) each. So Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Pakistan will have to let us use their airspace.
