I have to laugh at Bistros answer because it's true. Just because you have 20 dollars in Mexico they won't be looking at you like you have "money". It's almost the same as here. That is like going downtown and saying "I got 20 bucks what can I get"? A whole lotta nothing! If you are planning on getting by on this little of money, think again and bring more money.

In Cancun, Cozumel and Los Cabos you can use dollars inestead of pesos.
But in other parts of the republic you will need to change it to pesos, that about 220 pesos, with that you can have a meal on a restaurant or a sunglases.

people act like dollars are gold just because you are in Mexico. Yeah, you might get a million pesos but that doesnt mean you get a million dollars worth of stuff.
20 bucks=220.88 pesos.

I don't know... it's much later now but $20 now (2017) can buy you about 400 baros.. You can get maybe 6 large bottles of beer (if you have empties to take back), you can buy a little gasoline, you can rent a hooker on the triangle, you can get a pile of cds or dvds at the tianguis, you can get some chicken to cook, you can get a few taxi rides in town, you can get more bus/kombi rides in town, you can travel a little regionally (especially if you are a student with a valid id from a Mexican school or an old person with an INAPAM card), you can get a simple cell phone (nothing a thief is really going to want though), maybe a bribe for something a little infraction (but if you can bargain you might get more than one bribe out of it), a bunch of locally produce junk food, ditto street food, a few doctor visits at dr. simi, a couple shirts at the market or at cuamio, or a pile of smiles if you got your 20 dollars changed into 10 peso coins and gave a coin to each beggar that his cup out.

a new BMW $50,000 USD for one thats only $45,000 USD in the US.
a stay at a four star hotel $400 USD per night.
dude you better just stay home and count your pennys, cus you are broke here too.
well you could buy gasoline at $2.60 USD/gal. oh, wait its down to about that much in the USA too right now.
