well, in fact there is actually 2 people working together when performing an autopsy.

the one that actually cuts and take the organs out is whether a lab technologist, or an assistant-pathologist.

the one who puts the diagnosis on the cause of death is the pathologist. he/she cuts some parts of the tissue from the whole organs which he/she finds need more study.

these parts after fixing in the formol for a while are then put in some tiny plastic supports and analyse at the pathology laboratory. again LAB TECHNOLOGIST using their microtomes (they prepare a smear from the tissue about 2-3 micrometres thick) and staining the smears then let them to the PATHOLOGIST who studies them under the microscope and puts the final diagnosis.

pathology and autopsies are part of team work between lab technologist and pathologists.

autopsies are not only used for forensic studies, those are performed by coroners. but what im saying is about autopsies in an hospital, people dying shortly after their admission, or with unknown cause of death.

Besides coroner (a political title) and pathologist (a medical title) there is medical examiner or ME (usually an appointed position and legal title ) Most will have a medical degree specializing in pathology. There are also medical anthropologists who can be consulted in autopsies especially of very old or decomposed remains. A forensic pathologist (often the coroner or ME) is one who looks for evidence relating to a possible crime in the autopsy or remains analysis. You should be looking at medical schools in general -- you would need a general medical education before specializing in pathology. Hope your grades in math and science are at the top of your class and you can afford the cost and 8 to 10 years of college it will require to enter this field. By the way, it is nowhere near as glamorous and exciting as the TV shows make it look. Those gleaming high-tech labs and perky ME's in their cute clothes solving exotic cases in less than an hour are pure Hollywood fantasy. If you don't mind long hours, mediocre pay and rather disgusting and monotonous working conditions (often in facilities with tight budgets so you don't have all the best equipment and staff) dealing with depressing cases, by all means, follow that career path. Sorry to put it in such negative light, but you should be aware of some of the realities of the job.

A pathologist is normally the person who is assigned the job, but pathology is a much wider science, encompasing the studies of illness and disease, not just the dead body which results.

A medical examiner or coroner may be involved, but they might not be the person actually doing the chopping.

Yup it's the pathologist that does the research from the remains that the coroner dissects, then the mortician get to try to take the rest and make you look normal again. The actual name is a Forensic Pathologist.
