Question: Should I watch them in order as they were broadcast, or should I watch them starting with Serenity (the episode, not the movie)
Also, I assume the movie takes place after the shows, chronologically? Or is it first?

watch them in the order on the CDs starting with Serentiy like you said ending with objects in space

the movie is after the show. The show does not show how River gets where she is, for that you need the comic
I am going to disagree with the person below
Serenity the ep should be first it shows how the 2 siblings get on the firefly... the last ep is Objects in Space

This is a great, fun show! I had never seen it either until I first watched the movie, Serenity. I would definitely watch the episodes in order. Then watch the movie. It takes place after the show.

Do not watch them as they were broadcast. The DVDs have them in the order in which Whedon more or less intended them to air.

By all means, watch the 2-hour pilot, "Serenity" first.

What there was of the first season is mostly episodic - there is little continuity in the story arcs, from one to the next, although there is some character development and there are a few recurring characters who you want to see make their appearances in order.

===
Events in the movie take place 6-9 months after OiS.

There was a series of comic books, now one volume, that provides a bit of exposition between what happened between the series and the show.

They go in this order...I saw that someone suggested watching Serenity first, but it was one of the last shows (and the title for the movie), I know it was the first half of the pilot, but I don't know why it wasn't the first episode for the series. They should be watched in chronological order.

The Train Job
Bushwhacked
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Shindig
Safe
Ariel
War Stories
Objects in Space
Serenity
Heart of Gold
Trash
The Message

The movie wraps up the series.

Definitely watch them in order. It's a really good series and all of the episodes are good. You can watch the film without watching the series but I think that it works better if you wait. The start of the film sort of sums up the relevant bits of the series but it's better to watch it. Plus you really get to know the characters by watching the series. regardless of my rambling, you should definitely watch the first episode first as you get to see how some of the characters meet.
