Not all TV and radio stations are like that. There is one of each where it does not apply. KDKA has a radio and a TV station well east of the Mississippi river in Pittsburgh Pa. After they were founded a regulation was put in place where a W was to start the callsign of a station east of the Mississippi and a K for those west of the Mississippi.
This was done to help with keeping track of all broadcast facilities as the industry grew.

Initially US was assigned letters W, K, N and A by an international broadcast committee. N and A were reserved for military, W and K for commercial broadcasters. Later on the FCC standardized station call letters to 4 letters, W for eastern locations and K for western. So you will find some stations with call letters that don't follow this rule.

goes back to the federal radi act of 1934. KDKA started the trend
by having the first call letters, which happened to start with a K.
W does make sense as standing for west, and you would think they would have worked with the K for east as the station was the first with call letter, but leave it to the gov't to obscure and confuse. Read about the Petagon to see what I mean.
A few stations west of the mississippi have W call letters,
WHO and WMT.

both of these W stations exist in Iowa to this day, believe in or not

It was a decision by the FCC as Radio spread across the country. Some of the older stations don't fit that pattern. KDKA in Pittsburgh for example.
