He got them to laugh.

He made his sone think that the concentration camp was a contest & they were going to win a big prize for their stay. He mocked the german soldiers as they were leading him to his execution.

You do yourself a great disservice by accepting my secondhand comments. The movie is a gem. Watch it yourself & learn!
