No, nothing spiritual - it just means you can take the snake corpse to the hospital to aid in the identification of the poison in your system. If you have a sealed box you can put the live snake in, that would do just as well - although I think, sadly, that when you've just been bitten simply killing the snake would be quicker, and speed would be of the essence.

I can think of a few good reasons:
1.) By killing the snake and bringing it with you to the emergency room, the hospital staff will be able to better identify what type of snake bit you and what type of antidote to administer.
2.) By killing the snake, you prevent it from biting someone else, perhaps even saving a life.

I suppose a reason given would be that it makes for easy identification so you get the right anti-venom however if you can get the ID any other way - like trap it but not kill it, this would be more preferable

It would seem to me that the first priority was to obtain medical treatment but I suppose it might help in that treatment if the type of snake could be identified and killing it would allow this to be done.

No, actually you shouldn't kill it. If it is venomous, all you have to do is take a shot with the antidote. The snake is a wild animal. Take it to its natural habitat and leave it alone.

No, it's so that you can take it to the hospital so they can identify it and give you the correct anti-venom.
I dunno I just made that up. I didn't know you were supposed to kill them... although, if you've read Bryce Courtenay's book, Jessica, she learns the hard way that if you kill a brown snake, you should always keep one bullet in the gun for its mate cause it will hunt you down and kill you.
