If I use a money order to pay for something, will the recipient of the money order be able to tell where it came from? Specifically, will the recipient be able to tell what state I am in?

I'm not running from the law, but thanks for the insult.
I want to give someone a large gift, but I want it to be anonymous because I know the person will feel guilty and want to pay me back. And I think if she sees what state I am, she will automatically know it was me.

Yes a money order is trackable. Purchasing a money order is just like writing a check from your checking account. Since it is a way of transfering funds of U.S. currency it has a serial # along with all the info you need to provide when filling it out. The recipiant will know exactly where you live. IF you use false information in the payor's section of the money order (your info)and the money order is lost or the payee(the recipiant)cashes the money order but does not send the goods, then you have no claim to a refund due to the false info you supply.

is someone blackmailing you and you don't want them to find you? what did you do? are you running from the law? anyways, the money order may be trackable by the company that produces them but as for everyday people, I don't believe so. good luck.
