If the 3 main parties are not worth voting for is it OK to vote for the BNP or UKIP as a protest vote...........or would proportional representation be a better way, then each vote would count and perhaps the different parties would try to become more relevant to the public.........discuss !

You should vote for who you prefer. I used to have issues with PR because of the hung parliament issue, but now I'm all for a hung parliament, not getting legislation through quickly isn't such a bad thing after all. I'm just not sure how that would work with selecting MPs though.
To answer your question I will most likely vote Green at the next election, since they're the best match for my political views, and I will be hoping for a hung parliament with a Lib-Con coalition, since I'm kind of halfway between the two politically.
Oh, and I would have severe reservations about voting for UKIP, and would never encourage anyone, under any circumstances to vote for the BNP - the last thing we need in this country is more acceptance of racist behaviour.

Protests votes are useful to sway mainstream political parties to the right or left. However, having UKIP or the BNP in power is too frightening for words. Imagine a skinhead as chancellor of the Exchequer or the ability to veto at the UN.
I would save your protest votes for the bi-elections or organise right or left-wing rallies to force labour, conservative or the ineffectual and racist (cash for minority candidates) yellow ones further to the right or left. We have a democracy, its time to use it properly.

I am a Liberal Democrat and I think proportional representation is and excellent idea but neither of the two major parties wants it because ti would remove their domination of Parliament which they share albeit by taking turns

In the UK voting is done in a secret ballot, so don't ask such questions here as you're likely to get some un-called-for answers - like mind your own effing business buster!

I vote for UKIP, because I believe we should be out of Europe.
The acronym is not very attractive, I must say.

In my opinion, decide between the major candidates that are likely to be elected.
What is most important is that we all get out and VOTE.
