Given the current structure of MLB financing, neither team will be able to compete monetarily with the big teams. That means that they have to be smarter - better player evaluation, better coaching, better scouting. They need to identify potential breakthrough players early, before they actually become stars and become expensive, and use that knowledge for competitive advantage. The trick is to get the players when they are young and cheap, use them to win for a couple years, and then trade them for more young and cheap players before they become free agents.

For the Pirates, you'll have to get rid of Jim Tracy.

For the Royals, you need a new owner who wants to spend on the team.

The pirates will be back next year.

At the end of this year they were on a hot streak, and definatly passed my cubs, making the cubs the worst team in that league. The pirates will be a contender next year.

The royals just plain suck

Man will first have to land on Mars. Earth will have to be visited by aliens from another world. Both teams will have to start spending some of their money to keep decent players and stop being the AAA teams for the rest of baseball. (I was kidding about Mars & the aliens!!)

NEW OWNERS. DON'T GIVE ME THAT SALARY CAP CRAP EITHER SINCE TWINS & A'S ARE SMALL MARKET & COMPETE EVERY YEAR. ROYALS USED TO BE YANKEES MAIN COMPETITION WHEN EWING KAUFFMAN OWNED CLUB. PIRATE OWNER IS COMPLETELY OVER MATCHED.ROYAL OWNER DOESN'T USE REVENUE SHARING MONEY ON PAYROLL.

I salary cap. A salary cap, that is enforced, would give every team equal access to star players. As long as a few teams (Yankees, Red Sox and Mets) have all the money it will difficult for small market teams to compete.
