It would not be a "popular" vote. How many are the members of Congress? Example - if you had 100 members of Congress and the candidates for presidency was Jay Leno, David Letterman and Tom Cruise - if 55 members of Congress like Tom Cruise for his popularity as an actor rather than his capability to be head of the country - then you have your answer. You'd have Tom Cruise as President. Thats the reason why its called a "popular" vote because majority of the voting citizen of the country voted for someone to become president and not just a handful of men and women in congress.

No different than allowing the Supreme Court to decide Bush won.

We need to abolish the Electoral College and elect the President on a real popular vote!
