i've been told that the U.S have different systems to australia but is there any way of taking my current aussie mobile and buying a U.S SIM card over there? or is that not an option at all.
also i'm not interested in staying on my current plan and using international roaming.

Make sure your Aussie mobile is at least a tri-band. You heard right: the US and Canada use GSM frequency bands different from the rest of the world. If you have a tri-band phone, two of the bands already work everywhere except North America, leaving one band that works in NA.

And make sure your phone is unlocked, to allow you to insert any carrier's SIM to operate.

There are numerous US carriers who offer prepaid plans and SIMs through many retail outlets, so you should have no problem finding one that suits your needs.
