Wikipedia states that he died on 13 September, 1996 but there seem to be a few theories knocking about that he is actually still alive. Admittedly, I'm not a Tupac expert but isn't that what happens to lots of famous dead people (eg Elvis)?
Having said that, there were never any pictures released of Tupac in the hospital and the video for "I Ain't Mad At Cha" was released just days after his death.
However, the CNN page shown in the third link below was shown by Snopes to be a spoof!

Tupac is dead... if you followed the life of Tupac, you will find that he was infatuated with Machiavelli , the famous philosopher who was said be resurrected 7 years after his death. Following in suit, Tupac forcasted that he too would have a resurrection 7 years after his death and in 2003, his Resurrection CD and DVD was released which means that he himself would have to consider himself dead. (I know it sounds weird but think about it, you cant resurrect a live person)

I'm not sure, but honestly, "dieing" was the best career move he ever made. It turned him from an average rapper to being a Legend.
