Where should we go to eat good, tasty food on a budget? I want to try authentic regional cuisine. Any other site-seeing suggestions are welcome.

Coming 5 days before (might not have to be exactly 5 days before) the start of Chinese New Year would be good - you can then go shopping around Chinatown, and other areas as there'll be those festivities going on.
Hawker centers would be good options to cheap and tasty food (the hygiene standards are rather alright, not to worry).
For night- time hawker places, you can try Adam Road Food Center, or Chomp Chomp (Serangoon Gardens).
Other places include Lau Pa Sat (the satays there are nice, and there're many stalls to choose from), which is rather near the Esplanade (where the scenery's nice, and there's the Merlion there too). Buses that go there include bus no. 10.
You could try visiting the Singapore Zoological Gardens, or if you like the sun and the sea, Sentosa, or East Coast Park would be ideal places to hang out and get a healthy tan.
If you're a shopaholic - Orchard Road is the place to be at! :D

Singapore being a predominantly Chinese based population; therefore any celebrations based on the Chinese Lunar Year Calendar is considered a major event here.
My advise?
You can drop by every other day... just NOT during the Chinese New Year festivities, lol! Most complexes are closed during this time as are most eatery outlets.
For a variety of the local food scene, head on to Newton Circus Hawker Centre ~~> they basically have everything you crave under one roof and yeah it's reasonable^_^
As for sight-seeing, the tourist attractions are endless.
Spend the day at the Zoological Gardens, explore the Japanese/ Chinese Gardens and watch the display of lights at the Musical Fountain in Sentosa Island.

Most hotels are on Orchid Rd, this is a good place to stay because it is where all the action is. There are plenty of hotels to choose from, it really depends what you mean by affordable, if you travelling with dollars, pounds, euro, your affordable will be different to what they call affordable in singapore. Things to be aware of Singapore has plenty of strict laws be careful because they are very very strict, if you smoke put your ash and butt in the bin, or you can get fined up to $150 and chewing gum put it in the bin, actually just dont litter all together, they pride themselves on being the cleanest in asia

Any day of the year, just avoid the Chinese New Year dates (dates varied year to year), where most shops are closed for the holidays. For year 2007, the 1st day of the Chinese New Year is 18 February.
Hop on one of their city tours (many to choose from). Best way to cover many places in a short time.
For eating, restaurants and outlets found in all shopping centers. Suggest you eat at their 'food courts' found in the shopping centers and residental areas. Great choices here, with the many nationalities/cultures living together in this beautiful country state.

I am no Singaporean but go there most of the time, and there is no good and bad time in Singapore all time is good, the cuisine is made up of diff rent ethnic groups and no special meal, but the chilly crabs is good( lose some weight before you go as there is a tendebcy to add up some kilos with all the food testing), Carry a fold up umbrella as you can get freak 5minute shower in the afternoon, and Singapore do not need introduction or research just go and you will be in the swing of it within minutes, there is enough info available all over and if you don't know some this just ask the taxi driver, most of them is better than tour guides.

Don't come during the first 2 days of Chinese New Year, and the dates are 18 & 19 February 2007. Everything is closed on these 2 days. Otherwise, anytime in February is good.
Singapore is filled with food centres (or called hawker centers in local terms) that are not expensive. Go to places like Newton Circus for a wide range of local hawker center food.

first of all... just dont come on the 1st day of chinese New Year.. because the streets will be empty, shops will be close.Most of Singaporean are chinese. it is their time to celebrate with FAMILY not with customers.
5 days best to visit is afterward the 3rd day of Chinese New Year. Dont worry about food festivals or any celebrations. there are 15 days of Chinese New Year and u can pick any 5 days from 18Th February until 4Th March.
about food... what kind of food u 1 2 eat? Indian? Chinese? western? u can visit Little India or Kampung Glam or China Town... lots of hawker (food center) (kopi tiam) tt offer lots of authentic. u will know by the seller LOL. All food in Kopitiam is budget. dont worry it doesnt cost much as if u eat at fancy restaurants. it is start from SIN$ 4. depend on what is ur order.
Hope u enjoy being in Singapore at chinese New Year, but what i know it is better u go on X mast day.. more crowded and more merrier rather than CHinese New Year

If you come before Chinese New Year(CNY),
there will be many 'trade fairs' or local people known as 'pasar malam' or night market.
They sell all kinds of CNY goodies and
tib-bits /new clothings. there will be many light-ups, esp at Chinatown.
If you come after CNY, the pasar malam will be no more, but the light up still on till the 15th day of CNY.
Another attraction on/during CNY is the RIVER HONGBAO at/near Marina Square/Shopping centre. It has Chinese cultural exitbitions

5 Days in Singapore? You'll be bored. nothing much to see. it's just an island state. 2 to 3 days will be enough then use the 2 days to cross to Malaysia.
it's hitting two birds with one stone with very little additional cost.
Pro for Singapore: Without doubt a safe city.

im a singaporean, almost everyday is a good day to go out..
so u can just pick any 5 days in feb. but come during the chinese new years festival.. u can try diffrent kinds of food at the hawker centres available all around the country...
