Laptops with built in wireless have a way to turn the wireless on and off. Your wireless may still be turned off. It can be a switch on the laptop or a set of keys to turn it on and off - see your manual.

If the laptop detects the wireless connection, but cannot connect then you may need a security code either WEP or WPA to enter, in order to connect to your secured router.

Have you flicked the manual switch on the outside of the laptop to turn on the wireless features? Is the network card the default enabled card (RJ45 connector) for the internet on the laptop or the wireless one? Correct drivers installed and it showing up in Device manager correctly? Firewall on the laptop blocking access? Entered the WEP code for the encryption and access to the network?
