The only mathematical way to do this is with roman numerals:
IX - I = X
9 - 1 = 10
Even this is not really mathematically correct, but it's probably the answer that you should be looking for.

-9-1 =-10, could be the answer.
Although, I can almost assure you that the roman numeral answer is correct. It does not say subtract it says take away. This is a play on words. Example follows:
IX=9
I=1
X=10

So if you take the one away from IX you get X.

First you subtract one from nine the answer is eight.
I shall give you two to add in to eight.You have nothing to worry about.You will certainly have Ten with you.Is that OK for you?

just use roman numbers

1 = I
9 = IX
10 = X

taking one from nine means IX => I X => X
