I have a 10 yr. old with autism. I have been a stay at home Mom since his older sister was born (she is 12 and I currently home school her). One of the reasons I never went back to work was the difficulty in finding daycare that could work with my son's needs. I am interested in knowing how other parents have handled this situation and what their solutions might be. If you live in a county or state with a good program, be sure to name it so that I can put it on my referral data base (I am currently trying to build up a database to share special ed information with military families). Thanks!

Most daycares should offer special care. If you need a resource to do research use the site listed below. There are several good links to daycares and health needs. For a specific search use the Google search bar on the home page.

Many daycares require minimal, basic training and education for their staff. Even with typically developing kids, their means of dealing with children fall short of what is ideal. When you have a child with special needs, finding an safe, nurturing day care is even more difficult. I would suggest you visit several day care centers. I have found better care in "not for profit" centers, such as a church or privately run preschool than these large chain centers that are maxed out on their teacher/pupil ratio. The non profit centers are less likely to push the maximum number of children into a classroom in order to make a profit. Look for a school where there is a low turnover of teachers. See if they understand what "developmentally appropriate practices" mean. I worked in private day cares before I returned to school to get my BA in special education. I teach Pre K special ed, and many of my parents have had difficulty finding quality before and after care for their preschoolers with special needs. Good luck.

A daycare should offer special care for your child for no extra cost. Or check with your Department of Human Services and see who they may recommend. Good Luck!

inspite of the reality that daycares are approved through DPW, they commonly are not to any extent further approved through the dep. of teaching. Your baby will be served extra ideal through Early Intervention facilities through your county MH/MR workplace. at no fee to you, your baby would receive diagnostic finding out and suitable facilities. S/he would receive speech remedy, Occupational remedy (to paintings with the small muscle tissue in his palms), actual remedy or inspite of is counseled for his analysis.
