I've always been fascinated with Iran and Persian culture and I've read that the people are very friendly. But obviously political problems currently exist.. I'm Irish and white so I don't know how people would react (probably presume I'm British/American..?)

Of course it's safe. To be the most sure, it's best to have a local travelling companion. As it is with anywhere, avoid flashing your possessions (walet, mobile phones, iPods and what nots) for maximum safety. I heard that in Iran women must wear head scarves... I read that from a biography of an American woman who stayed there sometime ago but I dunno if it still is like that in Iran.
