It's good stuff! But I can make a mean pot of coffee at home that is good enough for me...most of the time.

because people are dumb enough to pay up, and people don't have taste buds (else why would McDonald's be successful?)
i could understand the success of Starbucks in the U.S. where most coffee elsewhere is just plain horrible
but in Europe, at least in some countries where there are ubiquitous cafes where to drink a good espresso, served at the table, in a real cup, for EUR 2-2.50, I just cannot fathom why so many people are happy to queue for many minutes to obtain a poor espresso served in a cardboard cup, which you have to carry at your table, and which costs you EUR 3-3.50.
And don't even get me started on the syrups and flavours and options, which have nothing to do with proper coffee. And Tom Hanks summarised it so well in "You've got mail": "The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino.
Anyway, it just goes to show that people can be (very) gullible, and that if you can find one of those gullible points, you can make a ton of money without much effort.

It's coffee, yes, but the beans are burnt to give it the taste that Starbucks is famous for. Never touch the stuff myself.
