My fiance is Jamaican (I am British) and he has indefinite leave in Britain. I have been offered a research job in Tanzania and we both want to live there during this time. It does not appear that Jamaicans need a visa to enter Tanzania (only an entry stamp) so will he need a residence permit to stay in Tanzania for a year?

If a visa/permit is needed, how would we go about this?

The reason why Jamaicans in theory do not need a visa is because Jamaica is part of the Commonwealth and are therefore exempt from requiring visas to Tanzania. What is not clear is if this also applies to residency or stay for more than 3 months. The Tanzanian High Commission in London are unhelpful and have not provided us with a clear answer to our question.

I think almost everyone needs an entry permit, as well as a Visa, to stay for any length of time in Tanzania. Of course, one also needs a long list of shots to enter the country as well.
My suggestion would be to ask at the Jamaican Embassy whether they have any knowledge. Also, someone in the British Foreign Service or Foreign Affairs may know how to contact the British or Jamaican Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

Also, a lot of the travel books, like Lonely Planet have helpful information.

Good luck with your trip. I know the bureaucratic red-tape can be difficult to overcome, but I hope you'll be able to deal with it.
