In Cognitive Behavioral Counseling. You focus on I.D, Label, and Modify "Negative Automatic Thoughts" (NAT). NAT's are thing like globilizing your problems (Nothing ever goes right or I'll never get through school). By I.D. our 'stinking thinking' we can redefine ourselves and our environment. As Epictetus once said "Men are not disturbed by things, but the view they take of things."

One approach is the Rogerian Approach, otherwise known as Client Centered Therapy. In this type of therapy, the therapist is merely an outlet and will rarely make suggestions to the client but will guide the client to a suitable resolution. Typically, CC Therapy takes a long time but the results are more long lasting.

Theories describe a model of why people have problems and how to help them have fewer, less frequent, or less intense problems. Techniques vary within theories, and therefore your question really doesn't make a great deal of sense. All theories involve assessment, goal setting, intervention, and follow-up / reassessment. However, the details attended to in each of these steps differs between theories.

The "Stages of Change" model put forward by Prochaska and DiClemente is a fairly easily understood desciption, and it is used across several counseling fields (family therapy, substance dependence, etc.). You can find a good synopsis of this in the chapter reproduced on this website:

Hope this helps.
