Catalystic converter in the car simply prevents knocking - very damaging for the engine.

Knocking is a miniature explosion of the fuel that happens inside the cylinder of the engine.

In the absense of the catalystic converter, you would have to use leaded fuel, which is extremely polluting.

yes it will be more powerfull, because you have better flow through the exhaust. However you will have to trick computer into thinking the cat. is still there because of the O2 sensor(s) deppending on what year and make the car is. The cat removes harmfull or polutant emmisions from the exhaust. So it would be polluting and usually illegal to remove one completely without a replacment. It is hard but not immposible to pass a emmision test also.

I had an '84 Mustang GT that I busted out the guts on the Cat and shortly after, had a SMOG check. Passed with flying colors. Anything you can do to remove restrictions in the exhaust will perform better. Just look out for the SMOG checks, if they find that you have modified, then it's a big fine.

If your converter is plugged, then yes, the car will have more power when you remove the converter. With the technology and research going into converters these days, there are some that actually boost horsepower in some vehicles. It just depends on the application.

You will not pass an emissions inspection without one.
