It may be many problems there, first you should defrag your harddisk, then remove programs which you don't use because it will help you faster bootup.
Although if you have a slow computer and you are till using heavy antivirus or spyware protection like Norton etc then it will also reduce the the system's speed to a bit.
I don't think that you should need more than 512kbps internet connection because 256kbps works very well and 512 is much better.
But if you have a fast computer then follow these steps: -
1. First if you are using windows xp then finally use NTFS file system on your all partitions of your harddisk.
2. Don't put trial versions of any softwares, many of them are waste and don't do much better work then the original one.
3. Also remember to defrag and run disk cleanup utility on your all harddisk partition.
4. Don't put too much protection on your computer if you are using it personally because it's no need of this. Protection is necessary when you are using your system in business. So remember to put a lighter antivirus software.
5. If you have a antivirus installed in your system then try shutting it of for some hours and the see if your computer works well then your antivirus software is eating your system's memory. Then replace it with a new one.
All of this will finally help your system to speed up.
Take Care Bye

1) delete all temporary internet files
2) defrag the system
3) get the updates to your anti-virus and spyware programs, and scan the system with them any way.
4) consider adding more memory only after these first steps don't help. The website below is one place to do so, but there are others, too.

You can try defragmenting your computer, if you have Windows xp ...go to start menu, then control pannels, then go to administrative tools. click into computer managment, then in the menu on the left side of that new window, click disk defragment, then click defrag. IT will take a very long time, maybe hours, but you will notice a difference. try to just leave it sitting doing the degrag test.

Just download System Mechanic 6. Does everything everyone else suggested you should do above without any hassle of actually having to do any of it.
Plus extra ram wouldnt be a bad idea as 512mb is a bit low nowadays.
