This fish is bred to fight! Hence the name "Siamese Fighting Fish" or "Japanese Fighting Fish." The males are more pron to be aggressive, but the females can be pretty aggressive too. The females can have the same pretty colors as the males, but their fins are short, not long. They actually are selling the female and male betas at my local Walmart, and I have bought them before. They are just best to keep in a tank by themselves. They won't just fight each other either, they will also pick at other fish too and bite their fins. It's really sad to see your long, pretty tailed fish having chunks bitten out of their tails. If you put a male and a female Betta together in the same tank the male will attack the female and eventually kill her if she will not mate with him. Even if they do breed, and the female lays eggs, the male role of the Betta is to take care of the eggs and he gets very protective and will attack her then. They are hard to breed anyway, I wouldn't recommend it.

This fish is territorial and it doesn't like another male fish in it's territory.
You can put a female with it and it won't fight.
Also if you put it in a large pond with another fighting fish it will find it's own territory and defend it.
They are not breed to fight, there a many fish that a like this, most are much bigger and not suited for aquariums.
Hope this helps you

Are you asking for homework help or something?
I live in Thailand, where Fighting Fish live naturally in the wild, as well as being pets. In a pond, in the wild, a male fighting fish has a harem, or group of females. He is biologically programmed to fight any other male he sees and keep him away from his females. The males are easily recognizable, as they are the ones with the pretty tails. The females are more plain looking, and not usualy sold as pets.

territory and mates. that's why they fight in smaller containers. I have read and heard about many people with large aquariums (55 gallon and up) that have housed two bettas together with no problems.

Two male betas will kill each other simply because of territory. They require alot of space and they will defend it with their lives.
