The Girl Next Door, by Jack Ketchum
I found this thrilling because it's so realistic. It's the kind of thing which could really happen, not some mystic fantasy you can reassure yourself isn't real "because..."
It's a definite favorite of mine.

IT by Stephen King. So terrifying and yet so good to read, I couldn't put it down! Shame they did such a bad job on the movie!
