I am a Democrat, because I believe that the government has no place in our personal lives (an old-school Republican notion actually), I am part of the working class (the Republican party doesn't help people like me-only taxes me to death-working class supports both the under-priviledged and over-priviledged), and I am consider myself to be opened-minded, I like to think for myself and am sympathetic to other's plights. That doesn't exactly jive with the narrow-mindedness of the conservatives.

Actually Shiraz, this means that I don't have to have an authority to tell me how to live and think. I do that for myself, thank you.

I agree with wild child. If the wealthiest of republicans had their way we would all work twenty hours a day, seven days a week , for peanuts! and our children would be right their along side us. exactly how life was like before the coalminers formed a union and got the ball rolling for the rest of us. We would all be one denomination. and there wouldn't be much difference between any of us. I will take liberalism over that kind of life anytime.

I have supported the Democratic party all my life because education and protection of the environment are important issues to me. I feel strongly that our children need and deserve the best education we can afford to provide, plus they are entitled to inherit a clean, safe environment from us.
Although I support the Democrats, I am not a liberal. I am a moderate. I believe in small, efficient government, limited taxation, and the protection of civil liberties. I am a supporter of states' rights and feel moral issues like abortion and gay rights shouldn't be addressed at the federal level. Moral issues are state or community issues and should be settled at that level without federal interference.
