bring a magnetic needle near the live wire if the current is moving
in the clockwise direction,it's corresponding magnetic field will be
towards south and hence deflection in the needle
and vice versa
no equipment is required ,you can do it

for metal detector
take two electrode and pass electic current so that there will
be electric field between the two.do you know that metals
have infinite capacity, that is it can store infinite amount of
charge or current
so if metal is placed between the above mentioned electrodes
electric field is cut off which you can find by connecting
a bulb in the external circuit

a magnetic compass suddenly shifts the direction it faces,when brought near a live wire or some metal.you can use this property to make a simple metal detector of your own
