My kids are wanting a lizard for a pet and I am considering some options, one is a local lizard that is EVERYWHERE around my house. The other is a bearded dragon. My question is do bearded dragons have to eat live food? I am an animal lover and have steered away from reptiles for as long as my children will let me because I dont want to kill anything, even crickets. What would be a good beginner lizard? Do all lizards require live food?

You can feed them an all pellet diet (I recommend Zoo Med's Bearded Dragon Food) along with giving them water, but it is rarely done without supplementing their diet with live food (crickets, superworms, silkworms, roaches). If you're willing to give it a go, you probably will get use to it. (Trust me, I'm the mom of a beardie owner and I also don't like the idea of feeding live food, but I adjusted and now it's no big deal to me.) Beardies are a great beginner reptile -- they are relatively easy to take care of and are quite friendly and responsive -- a very fun and rewarding reptile to own. Iguanas can be much more difficult to care for, health and temperament wise.

Bearded Dragon Live Food

Most lizards require live food. There are a few that eat fruits and veggies like iguanas but they are a lot harder to care for than the insect eaters. I wouldn't get an iguana for a child. Or most adults for that matter. Whatever you decide on make sure you do a lot of research before you bring it home. Have everything set up beforehand. Here is a link to some great lizard care sheets.

A Bearded Dragons NATURAL food - is insects ! They're desert creatures - feeding off the insects that live in the sand and on vegetation ! That's also how they get most of their moisture.

The Bearded Dragon is your best bet and unfortunately they do eat mostly live food, your other option is an iguana, they only eat fruits, and you can also buy thewm in the pet shops, no they don't all require live food

Go for a Uromastyx! They're similar in care and size to beardies, just a tad bit more hyper, but still handleable. They're vegetarians, and a ton of fun:-) The Mali Uromastyx is the most commonly available species... Stay away from iguanas, they get waaaay too big, and are NOT good beginner lizards.

i feed my dragon greens and locusts at night so he has somthing to look forward to. when dragons are past one i think they should be eating 20% insects and 80% greens. if you go on the internet they should have loads of care sheets which the experts will tell you :)

I know they eat insects but to give them their full diet they also eat fruits and leafy green vegetables. Be sure to check a reputable source online or in your area.
