I think that is a doom and gloom take on the world. There is enormous amount of respect for many good people in the world. I respect people who do good things for no benefit to themselves, like the Australian conservationist who was killed in Nepal recently. I also respect my own property and others. It is not fair to generalize and term everyone as distrespectful when it is only a certain category of society who are selfish and unfair.

Unfortunately, we live in a disposable society these days, if we no longer want something, we just throw it out regardless if someone else could make use of it. Every thing is too easily replaced today, including people. If you get tired of something, so what, find something bigger/better. How can we teach our children to respect their possessions, when we replace them all too quickly for them? How can we teach our children to respect each other when they more often than not, see just the opposite on T.V. and at home? How do we change this? One person at a time, starting at home.

Because each person has little respect for themselves. Respect starts inside yourself. With these kids being taught that they don't have the ability to do anything with out mommy or daddy holding their hand the whole way, how are they going to respect themselves? And if they don't respect themselves, they would think that any one is worthy of respect either.

I get respect every day, you have to earn it. it is not something that you just get as soon as you are born. Sometimes life can be harsh and you just have to start respecting people before they respect you, and maybe you will see some changes, just dont assume that you are going to get respect automatically. life is a gift, enjoy it to the fullest, and if you start a trend of respecting others, you might find out something new about strangers. they do respect, but you have to EARN it. it is just never given.

Cause everything and everyone sucks! Or is gay.
Nowadays? Like there ever was a perfect time when everyone was nice and respectful and things have been going down-hill ever since. That's an illusion. Things have always been moderatley crappy in every way. You just notice it now more cause you didn't pay attention to that stuff when you were a kid.

because we are living in a society where the word 'respect' doesn't mean anything to certain people anymore. they don't care about anything or anyone that matters to them. the only thing people care about these days are material possessions- wealth, clothes, cars, fame, looking a certain way to please themselves, as well as greed and ignorance and arrogance. for me you only get respect by earning it in the first place. i have come across people throughout my life who have disrespected me and of whom have thrown things right back in my face. some would say that those who disrespect you, you should disrespect them in return, but not me. i wouldn't waste any of my time on them because they are a bunch of losers in my books, anyway. yet as long as people treat me with respect and with the utmost courtesy, then i'd more than happy to return the favour back to them.
respect is something that every parent and teacher has to instill in the children. forgive if i'm wrong, and please, i am not in any way lecturing parents on how to raise their own children but the notion of respect begins right at home, then at school and so on.
people must learn to respect one another, of each others opinions, even though they may not agree with them and to be considerate, polite and behave in an appropriate fashion.
and i'd rather not have politicians give all of us , especially parents, parenting lessons on how to raise their children. its none of their business and as they of whom should stay away from it.

Because the reasons for which people respected each other or certain things are all dying out (intentionally in some instances).... these reasons could include religion, appreciation for the other, love, understanding, etc.

THE PREVIOUS GENERATION TEACH US THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE IS TO GO AHEAD, NO MATTER WHAT WITHOUT ANY COMPASSION TO ANYBODY NEITHER TO YOUR NEIGHBOURS, FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. THE MEDIA , HYPE UP THE SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE AND NOT THE GOOD, CARING PEOPLE. WE LOVE TO PUT MORE IMPORTANCE OF THE THINGS THAT ARE MATERIALLY ACCESSIBLE THAN WHAT IS SPIRITUALLY IMPORTANT! GOD BLESS US ALL!!AND HOPE CHANGE WILL COME SOON BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!

Because some parents don't teach respect. They are too busy letting the t.v. raise their kids.
