Thinking about buying a cordless hammer drill. I need one that will last and have good battery life. Dewalt seem very expensive, are they worth the money. The DC988 is advertised alot. Looking for at least a 14.4v or 18v model. Any experience or comments welcome.

Dewalt drills are a very good tool. Things some people dont know is that there are 2 levels of Dewalt tools- compact and XRP. XRP are the ones a contractor will use and are a good tool for the regular DIY's to purchase. Personally I own a Dewalt drill 14.4 and it has served me well, but if I was to go and get a new drill then I would be buying a Ridgid tool. Ridgid tools have move power(torque) in the same class for less but sometimes they have more power that in other classes ie a Ridgid 12v 3/8" chuck has a torque rating of 300 in/lbs of torque while the dewalt compact 18V has 300 in/lbs of torque. Now if your me I would much rather handle a 12v than a clunky 18v. Plus the Ridgid will and have a lifetime warenty batteries inc. while the Dewalt will have a 1yr parts and labour and 2yrs on the batteries. another expamle is the Dewalt inpact driver 18v has 1170 in/lbs of torque where the Ridgid 14.4 has 1400 in/lbs and their 18V has 1450 in/lbs all their tools will sell for less $$. Dont get me wrong Dewalt makes a good tool but there are better tools out there. I just like the thought of never having the buy another drill unless I need an extra one by going with Ridgid. Plus the wife will love the idea too, one less tool to buy again= more $$ that she can spend..ha ha j/k any lady DIY's

Dewalt seems to be the industry standard but they are overpriced. Shop around and read reviews. Battery life has nothing to do with the drill. Battery life specs are given in Amp-Hours. Most professional models are at least 2.0 AHrs. I purchased a Panasonic cordless which I consider to be better than the Dewalt. It is a 15.6 V and comes with two 3.5 Amp Hr batteries with a recharge time of 50 minutes.
That drill retails for around £200 but I got it out of the states for around $175. I use my 240-110V transformer for the charger and have never had any problems. I only do DIY but love that drill. It is lighter, smaller than the Dewalts. Only thing is mine is not a hammer drill so it may not be for you.

I have always been a great believer in getting what you pay for, and no more so when it comes to power tools.
But as all the so called proffessional ones are so expensive i bought a cheaper brand when i first started up my bussiness.
I bought a 24v hammer drill, keyless chuck with 8 torque settings, carry cse and bits from screwfix direct, it cost me £49.99 4 years ago. I have used it god only know's how many times and i cannot fault it.
The batteries are now pretty week so i contacted the manufacturer to order new ones because i could not part with it.
It was going to cost over £50.00 for two replacement battery's with postage so the meany in me couldnt justify paying more for two batteries than i did for the whole kit. I new screfix were no longer selling that model, but thought i should go for the same brand and checked out the website. lo and behold, in the special offers section they were selling the very same drill, two batteries, carry case and bits all for £24.99. I snapped up two right away and gave one to an uncle who was impressed with the performance of the drill on a job we did together. He was the owner of a dewalt 24v and it was no where near as torqy as the ferm, the battery lasted longer and even though it was expensive to replace the battrey's alone, they were half the price of replacements for the dewalt, i now have two great drills and four batteries two of which are ok to do small jobs so to sum up i have changed my tune a little when it comes to power tools, i will do a little research befor i buy any expensive tools from now on.

My husband has a few Dewalt drills and I love using them. He swears by them and uses them at work a lot. He does have the cordless ones and they seem to keep their charge a very long time. I was at first skeptical over the price, but ours have been well worth the price! Good luck!

DeWalt is a fine cordless but for the serious workers and you know who you are I suggest Bosch. Made for heavyduty work load, very well built and will out last most on the market. Spend the extra money to get the best!!

I do like DeWalt tools. I have a variety of cordless tools. DeWalt, Porter Cable, Hitachi, Craftsman, etc... DeWalt does last, is strong but I will say for an inexpensive cordless tool, Hitachi is your best bet. Very reasonable, and a very good tool. Go to EBAY, under cordless tools type in drilling 99, they are a good supplier in Hitachi. Some are reconditioned but still like new and fully guaranteed. Also under "diamond drilling & supply" Check them out, you'll be glad you did

Yes they are worth the money. I have used a lot of cordless tools, and nothing stands up to abuse and lasts as long as DeWalt. If you are just hanging pictures in your house you can buy cheap stuff and it will be ok... but If you are going to use it for a heavy duty cycle... get the good stuff... and go with the 18V.

Best for a hammer drill is either Milwaukee or Hilti. These are originally contractor lines that are now sold in many contractor lumber yards and some Big Boxes like depot or lowes. Not sure which but they are really tough. Dewalt is popular because they spend a ton on advertising. I think they are owned by Black and Decker so that may explain their big advert budget. You will spend more but will be real happy with the tool.

in april i bought my bf an 18v cordless drill and its worked really well for him so far.. i bought a mastercraft drill (its a canadian tire brand)
and i bought it as it was mid range.. (not a dewalt or anything)
and i figured it would be better to spend the extra money and get a decent drill that will last him forever more or less...

i'd go for the 18v that way it should do whatever you need it to do..
