I'm only 18 weeks pregnant right now, but I've been told in the past (by previous gynecologists) that I have very narrow pelvis bones and a narrow birth canal and that a vaginal labor would probably be very difficult and painful for me. I also have always experienced some pain during sex because of this. My uterus is also tilted. Well anyway, my OB now, says that he feels I should be able to deliver vaginally just fine. I'm worried though. has anyone else every been told they are 'very narrow' by a doc and yet still delivered vaginally??

Yes there are those of us out there who have been classified as narrow, but still managed to deliver the "good ole fashioned way" Quit worrying about it and concentrate on that healthy baby!!

If you were to have a c-section, would that be so bad? I am so happy that we live in the age of technology! A hundred years ago it was so much more common that a woman died in childbirth.

I guess my point is to put some faith in your doctor and hope for the best! Good luck and congratulations on your baby!

I haven't personally been threw what you are describing, but I can tell you the human body can do some amazing things. Your hips and pelvis seperate while you are pregnant, they may have expanded more then the original DR thought they would. Also if you are carrying a smaller baby it will fit threw easier. Just educate yourself on the posabilities so you can be prepaired for things if and when they happen. This way if you have to have a c-sec b/c the baby isn't fitting you don't totally flip out. Listen to your body, your instincts and your DR. If you trust your DR then all should go smoothly but be sure to talk to him about what can or might happen and see how he handles things, etc so you know you are on the same page before the even arrives.

Most importantly, and this really is the most important part, reguardless of what you think your perfect labor and delivery should be, reguardless of whether you can do it or not, in the end the only thing that will matter is the baby is here and you won't care anymore. Pushing it out or having a c-sec, it doesn't matter.

With my ob, he said my pelvis is flat and narrow. That I would be able to deliver vaginaly but nothing over 7lbs. So I do C-Sections because I haven't had a baby that small. All 3 almost 8 lbs. So you are able to deliver a baby, just the dr should be able to tell you how big you can deliver. But will know better closer to the end. Good Luck

I was never told that I had a narrow birth canal until I was 9 days past my due date and my doctor said I was carrying an almost 10 pound baby. The doctor told me that my baby was to wide to fit into my birth canal because she had not dropped yet. He said that if I had a regular birth that my babys shoulders would have broke and I would have had lots of problems! So I said I want a c-section tomorrow! All went fine and dandy and I had a wonderful and healthy 9.6 pound baby girl. I'd really talk to your doctor and ask lots of questions! Maybe a C-section is not a bad idea for you to do. Good Luck!

Well if your OB says you'll be ok, then chances are you will be. They most certainly wouldn't put you or baby at any risk.
Get a second opinion if you are still concerned about it.
Birth is painful anyway, so your original gyny was a real genius!

Even women who are 'wider' in the hips might need some help with birth, so i think it also boils down to luck.

I wish you lots of it. x

You will be very surprised by what your body is capable of. Over the next few months, bones and ligaments will loosen as your insides prepare to deliver that baby. As for the birth canal, it's an impressive organ that stretches to allow passage and then shrinks it's self up.

Were I you, I would be applauding that OB.

it has nothing to do with how petite or large your body is as much as what you stated about your pelvic bones being very narrow. if they refuse to move to allow your baby to come through then you'd have to have a C section. i've known a few women with the same problem. some of which were overweight.

hey, if you are too narrow to deliver your baby, its head wont engage and will be sitting alot higher than normal after about 31 weeks. Then they will probably suggest a cesarean. Whatever happens youll be fine, dont worry too much it all happens as its supposed to anyway!

Your going to have to try and trust your doctor. they wont put you or the baby in harms way. When the time comes they will know if it is possible by how big the baby gets and other factors. If it isnt possible then they wont try it. So try to enjoy your pregnancy and keep asking your doctor questions. so youor mind can be at ease.
