because the girl would just end up in tears and the guy would feel bloody terrible (so he should) for breaking up with her

well... maybe,,, the guy is thinking about the shame he'll be giving to the girl....it's common that the girl should be the one giving up in a relationship.. maybe the guy is a bit shy to tell her... because maybe he doesn't want to step at her ego...
