It's very difficult to earn money as an author, and even more so as a publisher.
India may well be different than the US, but to the extent that it's the same, the following will probably hold:
For fiction, I strongly suggest that you get a reputable, experienced agent, and have that agent shop your manuscripts to publishers. First fiction is hard enough without adding any layers of difficulty.
For non-fiction, you have two options: publish it yourself, and get an agent, etc. Publishing the books yourself allows you to claim both the author's share of the proceeds and the publisher's, BUT it requires that you have the skills and experience to do both halves. Most people don't, and if they do, they usually lack the up-front funds necessary to successfully launch a popular book. (NB: I do NOT advise using a subsidy press, also called a POD press, if you are trying to publish for profit on your own.)
Whatever choices you make, you should go to your library and get some books on the process. (I like the Publishing Game series by Fern Reiss, but there are many alternatives.)
Pay attention, at every step of the process, to the ideal eventual readers. WHY are they looking for a book like yours? What do they want from it? How can you give them more of that?
Think about the marketing process for your book, as you are writing it. What else do your ideal reades do? Where might they be found? What things can you add to the book that will make it easier to get attention? For example: in a murder mystery which features a dog -- might part of the story take place in a dog show? That would make it easier to garner attention from breeders' or kennel club magazines, or dog show participants, web sites, etc.
Last, but not least: publishing is high-stakes gambling. There are no guarantees in this business. If you are an author, don't count upon more than any non-refundable advance you have received. If you are publishing, don't risk anything you can't afford to lose.
Good luck.

Aside from traditional publishers, agents, and that "road to publication", you can utilize self-publishing companies. You pay for your book to be published. Then it is offered to the public as a POD (Print on demand). If someone desires to purchase your book, a copy is printed and sold to them. This is usually not a quick riches road, but one sure way to publication. I have a novel published this way, and for myself it was worth it. http://www.mtaonline.net/~fom
PS - I recommend the publisher you shall see I used on my website if you visit. If you use their services, please mention my referral of them to you. Thank you kindly.

Check Writers Digest. Find out how to submit your work to a publisher. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't sell, just try another one.

First step would be to get an agent. It is much harder to get published without one.
