The assassination attempt was not by a single individual but by a group of German military officers, Gen. Erwin Rommel among them.The actual planting of the time bomb hidden in a briefcase was done by a Gen. von Stauffenberg, during a conference. Unfortunately, when Stauffenberg left the conference somebody moved the briefcase under the heavy oak conference table, and Hitler was saved when the table absorbed the blast. Because of this, von Stauffenberg, his relatives, and even those remotely connected with them were arrested and executed and Gen. Rommel was forced to commit suicide. Their purpose was to save Germany from further destruction, because, in 1944, the year the assassination attempt was made, they felt that Germany had already lost the war, and to prolong it would be to subject the German civilians to unnecessary suffering. To do this, they had to do away with Hitler.
