Take your pick. Could be mice, squirrels, rats, bats, possums, or raccoons. You might want to call an animal removal specialist. If you want to handle it yourself, put traps or poison in the attic, where the dog does not go.

First you have to shut off all outside access to your house. It is most likely somewhere up near the eaves that they are getting in, because these are the most easily chewed through. Fix the holes. Cover them with board or stuff the smaller holes with steel wool (no animal can chew through it).
Then buy a commercial rat poison. It will come as the poison (blood thinner) mixed with ground meal. I find the very best way to tempt the unwanted creatures to eat this is to mix it with grated cheese, and just enough peanut butter to bind everything together. Form into small golfball sized balls. (MAKE SURE TO WEAR RUBBER GLOVES DURING THE MIXING AND MOLDING PROCESS- -the last thing you need is to absorb the poison through your skin.
Then go into your attic space, and if it's wide open, just start pitching the balls all over. Try to get them as close to the edge of the roof line as you can.
The mice/squirrels/rats will eat the bait and start bleeding internally. This will kill them in no time. (2 to 4 days depending on the size of the animal) And your dogs and you can go back to sleeping peacefully.

It's probably mice or bats. I had the same problem in my basement. I went to Wal-Mart and purchased Catchmaster Glue Boards. They will also get rid of any bugs you might have running around. I tried D-Con first. It works, but the critters died under my house where we couldn't find them.(mice) and oh me!!! did my house ever smell bad for several weeks. Never again. No more D-Con.....Better still, use traps.

Sounds like mice. They can be really loud. Possibly a squirrel in the attic. Put out mouse traps (use peanut butter for bait) and get a have-a-heart trap for the attic (again, use peanut butter for bait, in this trap, put it on a piece of bread). Make sure you have mouse traps in your attic as well.

You can buy these electronic boxes at Wal-Mart or other stores, for like $10-15. You plug them into a wall socket and they make a high-pitched noise that drives rodents away, but will not affect your pets. It does work!

Could be mice, bats, bees, termites, squirrels...any number of things. And, they could be causing irreparable damage. I'd say a professional exterminater is in order if you've not been able to figure it out on your own.
